A Personal Story

I have known Michelle Smiley for about four years...She is filled with integrity and her cup runneth over with the drive to help families....As  a retired kindergarten teacher of 27 years, a parent of a child with down syndrome and a grandma of an almost two year old, I know first hand how important using sign language along with verbal words and phrases makes an impact with...learning.  They have a visual cue, an auditory word and then the learning transpires very quickly.  Oftentimes [they] do not have the verbal language to express their needs and wants so they get very frustrated… With Signs For SOL communication needs will be met and will be a pleasant experience for all.

About Michelle Smiley

BA Drama, MS Deaf Education, Owner of Third Eye Interpreting, LLC

Michelle has 30+ years experience in the fields of Deaf, Special, and General Education; Sign Language Interpretation; collegiate instruction; and transformational coaching.

She was inspired to start Signs for SOL in honor of a loved one and because of her own bout with Bell's Palsy. The Bell's Palsy left half of her face paralyzed. It affected her speech, vision, and hearing and made articulation very difficult. She remembers vividly how appreciative she was to be fluent in ASL. She also remembers how much she wished everyone around her knew even a few key signs to ease the struggle, frustration, and exhaustion she experienced when speaking. Her desire, with Signs for SOL was to create a program that was easily digestible and immediately applicable for its members while simultaneously providing allyship to the Deaf community, for which ASL is at the heart.

A resource list of Deaf or Hard of Hearing run or owned businesses and organizations is featured on this website. Please support these businesses. Go to them first when wanting to learn ASL, about the Deaf community, or support around hearing loss.

To those in the Deaf community who have taken me under your wing, embraced me, and taught me your beautiful language, I am eternally grateful.

Michelle is a self proclaimed brave thinker and bold actor. She loves travel, personal development, and performance. She is a Teacher of the Deaf for Jefferson-Lewis BOCES and an instructor at Jefferson Community College. During her off hours you will most often find her singing as part of an acoustic duo, acting in murder mystery dinner theater, or performing on some other stage.
